The sea holly, E. martimum is as its name suggests a very prickly plant found on the sea shore, usually at the upper water mark. The holly-like leaves are bluish-green with a white bloom which gives a waxy appearance. The flowers are arranged in dense oval heads surrounded by a collar of prickly bracts. The tiny white flowers have protruding blue stamens and each is surrounded by a star shaped calyx.
