The giant orchid Himantoglossum robertiana shoots up rapidly among the grassland of the olive groves in early spring. It is a robust orchid with thick straight stem and crowded flower spike The base of the stem is surrounded by broad, glossy, green leaves. The flowers are greenish flushed with purplish-red, in close up markings, resembling a spider hidden deep inside the flower, can be seen.
