Ophrys lutea - var. minor

Yellow bee orchid                                                                                             Μελισσάκ

Orchidaceae - the orchid family                                                                          Monocot

This subdued green and yellow orchid appears in the spring before being overwhelmed the more robust vegetation around it. Like all members of the ophrys genus it's appearance resembles the insect which pollinates it, in this case a male Adrena bee, a solitary mining bee, which when its legs are covered in bright yellow pollen, bears a striking resemblance to the yellow bee orchid.
