Mirabilis jalapa are one of the worlds oldest garden flowers, brought to Europe by the Conquistadores from  S. America. They are still grown for ornamental purposes in Skopelos but have naturalised in the wild and can be troublesome weeds.

They are attractive flower with brilliant pink or yellow flowers and unusually both colours in a single flower, white flowers also occur sometimes flecked with pink. The flowers remain closed during the height of the day but open in the evening. They are attractive to moths including the humming bird hawk moth and the death's head hawk moth. On certain nights they may be surrounded by many moths, too numerous to count.
