The pale purplish-pink heads of Scabiosa atropurpurea can be seen along the roadside, waving even in the gentlest breeze at the top of straight thin stems. Careful inspection reveals that these are not single flowers but a crowded collection of tiny florets. The central florets are tubular and these are surrounded by asymmetrical flowers of larger fuse petals giving the whole a lacy appearance.
