These tiny flowers appear as bright jewels as the green grass of spring begins to cover the bare soil. The English name of scarlet pimpernel, of course refers to the red variety which is much commoner than the blue in Britain, although in Skopelos the brilliant blue flowers are found just as frequently. The flowers open in sunshine and close in shade: they are thought to forecast the weather.

The Scarlet Pimpernel

The name Scarlet Pimpernel has become famous as the fictional hero of numerous films, TV programs and musicals, based on the books by Baroness Orczy.  In many adventures, the noble Englishman, Sir Percy Blakeney, played a double role: as a foppish playboy and as an elusive vigilante, who saved French noblemen from the guillotine during the Rein of Terror of the 16th Century French Revolution. After each rescue he left a card signed by the simple star shaped flower, the scarlet pimpernel.

"The name of a humble English wayside flower; but it is also the name chosen to hide the identity of the best and bravest man in all the world."
