The beautiful white poppies were growing amongst the weeds on spoil heaps, deposited after the catastrophic flooding of the previous autumn. The white petals fall quickly to reveal the long narrow seed capsule, typical of the species, P dubium. The subspecies lecoquii is less common than subspecies dubium, but is distinguished by the yellow juice which seeps from the damaged stem, staining the fingers. White poppies occur sporadically on Skopelos, it was unusual to see them in such numbers.
