A special plant which has a limited distribution; growing only in the Eastern Mediterranean Silene fabaria is found in rocky sites near the sea. It has long, slender flower stems arising from a clump of succulent glaucous (hairless) leaves. The flowers hang down like little lanterns. The white petals protrude from the calyx, the stamens are deep purple, almost black and stigmas pale purple.
