Ruta graveolens
Common Rue Απήγανος
Rutaceae - rue family Dicot.
An attractive low lying plant with feathery, blue-green foliage and yellow flowers, Ruta graveolens is very similar to the commoner (on Skopelos) Ruta halpensis, but although the petals are wavy at the edge they do not have the little projections characteristic of halpensis. It thrives on poor soil in sunny sites and is often found on the roadside.
The plant has a characteristic strong aroma and is often planted in gardens, it is considered a good companion to roses and raspberries but not sage or cabbages. Because of its strong smell is considered to repel insects and cats.
Historically it has been used as a culinary herb, but its strong bitter flavour is not to the modern taste. It has also been valued as a herbal remedy for a variety of complaints. In quantities it is poisonous and particularly dangerous to pregnant women.
ruta from Roman name for the herb
