Iris germanica is a tall handsome purple iris varying from light mauve to deepest purple . The petals have brown guide lines on white background and yellow beard. The tall stems raise the flower above the sword-like leaves. The dark purple flowers shown here They are usually found as single plants or small groups on the edge of fields, olive groves or orchards but occasionally spread more widely. They are often taken into gardens. These plants were probably introduced to Greece from the far east during the time of the Ottoman Empire but are now naturalised throughout the Mediterranean.
