Growing in limestone soil or rocks, often on steep slopes, Ptilostemon chaemaepeuce is tolerant of dry conditions. It is a small shrub with leaves which look rather like pine needles, but are soft to touch. The clusters of purple thistle-like flowers are followed by soft white "thistle-down."
