Long headed poppy                                                        Παπαρούνα μακρόκαρπη

Papaveraceae - poppy family                                                                           Dicot.

Papaver dubium is probably the true wild poppy of Skopelos it; is similar but less robust than the field poppy, Papaver rhoeas, and is  is abundant and found on roadsides, olive groves and waste ground, it even groes on the upper reaches of Panormos beach. The bright red disc shaped petals sometimes but not always has black markings at its centre.

There are fewer stamens and the stigma  disc is more prominent than P. rhoeas but the main differentiating feature is as it's common name suggests is it's longer, narrower seed head.

The leaves are deeply cut and stems have adpressed hairs.
