Found in moist, shady places S. peregrina has tall straight stems with tiny deep red flowers arranged on branched stalks in the axils of alternate leaves. The bright green leaves with toothed edges are similar to nettle leaves.

The family name of Scrophularia comes from the use of S. nodosa for the treatment of scrofula the medieval name for tuberculous glands in the neck.
