A stiff bush with straight, leafless, sharp tipped branches which bursts into brilliant gold in the springtime. It grows on sea cliffs, dry stoney ground and at the edge of fields and olive groves.

The abundant flowers are bright yellow, papillaceous (butterfly like) and followed by green pods.

The branches can be used to make brooms or woven into fences provide protection against wind and sun.
