As its name suggests false cleavers (Galium spurium) is very similar to cleavers (G. aparine) but on careful inspection  it appears less robust and less spiky, with fewer, shorter hairs that are somewhat softer.

It is said that the genus name Galium comes from Greek for milk as bedstraw used by Greek shepherds to filter milk, when making cheese.
