Samolus valanderi, grows throughout Europe on the sea shore, salt marshes and river banks; on Skopelos it is found only in damp shady sites on the edge of a freshwater stream. The plant has tiny white flowers and lush green leaves, in some countries it is used in traditional herbal medicine and although it is edible but has a bitter taste and it has been noted that it is only eaten when other vegetables are scarce.
Samolus derived from Celtic word meaning healing
valerandi from latin validus meaning strong
