The shrub variety of the Medicago family M. arborea grows in dry rocky environments with poor soil. It covers the steep slopes  of the kastro. The bushes are green throughout the winter and covered in clusters of yellow pea flowers in spring, which quickly develop  into sickle shaped seed pods, which remain clinging to the plant throughout summer. All the plants of the  medick family have interestingly shaped fruits. The plant is deciduous in summer, a strategy for surviving severe drought.
