Scorpiurus muricatus

Prickly caterpillar plant                                               Σκορπίουρος ο σκωληκοειδής

Fabaceae - pea family                                                                                              Dicot.

The flowers of Scorpiurus muricatus vary in colour from lemon yellow through orange to dusky red. A low spreading plant, unusually for members of the Fabaceae family, it has simple undivided leaves; these are covered in stiff hairs. The leaves when young can be eaten and along with a number of other plants is referred to in Greek as agrio spanachi (άγριοα σπανάκι), wild spinach.

The common English name is descriptive of the seed pods which resemble prickly caterpillars. (Unfortunately no photo.)
