In springtime, the greenish-yellow flowers of Smyrnium perfoliatum seem to catch sunlight filling the olive groves with subtle beauty; they create a perfect contrast with other flowers in particular brilliant red poppies. The unusual leaves surround the stem and the yellow flowers are arranged in umbels above them.

Later in the year the plants dry remaining as pale skeletons as they develop their black seeds.
