Similar at first sight to the yellow coastal sedum (Sedum litoreum), Sedum urvillei is a perennial plant and differentiated by the dried remnants of previous years growth. It grows in dry rocky places or from the crevices of dry stone walls. It can form low growing mats of non-flowering stems.

As a succulent plant it is well adapted to the Mediterranean climate. A novel use of the plant is as part of a biodiverse green roof system on environmentally friendly  buildings.
